Pacing: Keeping Your Reader Engaged:
Good narrative pacing controls tension, flow, and atmosphere in a story, affecting reader experience and keeping them turning pages. In this session, we will discuss techniques to control the pace and learn tips to improve the overall flow of your story starting at page one and continuing to the end.

Donna Brennan: The Emotional Roller Coaster: Taking Your Reader for A Ride

Not all roller coasters move at break-neck speed. But depending on their intended audience, they provide enough dips and turns to provide an exciting (yet pleasant) experience for the rider and doesn't let them get bored. Our books should do the same thing: building tension, providing a thrill, and allowing time to recover before ratcheting up the tension some more. Readers should not want to step out of the book in the middle any more than a rider should want to step off a roller coaster before the ride is over.

Building on what we covered in the morning, this interactive session will have many examples of pacing that works well and some examples where the pacing is not engaging enough. We will look to understand why it works well and why it doesn't. And when it doesn't work well, we'll brainstorm ways to improve it.
